Published in 1997 by the Groninger Museum in the Netherlands, in conjunction with a touring exhibition that travelled to Australia and Denmark, A History of Sex gathers Andres Serrano's photographic explorations of desire, the body, and taboo. The book moves through two sections: a retrospective survey of Serrano's more familiar but still provocative imagery, and a second sequence of graphically sexual photographs that expand the scope of his investigation. Alongside the images, the book includes an interview with author and former call girl Xaviera Hollander. Serrano's lens encompasses nomads, klansmen, Catholic iconography submerged in bodily fluids, mental and physical difference, and explicit sexuality with equal rigour. A landmark of confrontational photography.
