In 1969, curator Jan van der Marck staged Art by Telephone at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago. Artists phoned in instructions and the museum made the works. This book revisits that legendary conceptual experiment. It documents a research project that restaged the exhibition with new artists, whose works were dictated over the phone and then interpreted and produced by art students. The project toured venues including La Panacée in Montpellier, the CAPC in Bordeaux, the Emily Harvey Foundation in New York and the San Francisco Art Institute, and contributors range from Robert Barry and Mel Bochner to Jan Dibbets. It is essential reading on authorship, instruction and the dematerialised art object.
