Schnabel is an American painter and filmmaker who is known for his use of found materials and chance-based processes. His work has helped to transform the conventions of painting and has influenced a new generation of artists. In the 1980s, he gained international attention for his "plate paintings", which are large-scale paintings with broken ceramic plates set into them. Schnabel has also directed several films, including Before Night Falls and The Diving Bell and the Butterfly.
