Published by SteidlMack in September 2006, Neighbors / Nachbarn is the first volume of Collier Schorr's ongoing suite of artists' books, Forests & Fields — a project that uses the conventions of documentary and fiction to create an expanding, self-contradicting portrait of a single small town in southern Germany. Over twelve years, the American photographer embedded herself in the community, combining the roles of war photographer, travelling portraitist, anthropologist, and family historian. The book interweaves stories of memory, nationalism, war, emigration, and family, using and subverting photographic categories to produce something that is part diary, part photo-annual, part palimpsest. 88 pages, 58 plates.
