Winner of the Un/Fund Award 2023 and nominated for the First Photobook prize at the Paris Photo–Aperture PhotoBook Awards 2024, Rotting from Within is a searingly personal debut from Berlin-born, New York-raised artist Abdulhamid Kircher (b. 1996). The book begins at seventeen, when Kircher reconnected with his estranged father, and unfolds as a meditation on patriarchy, masculinity, and the weight of inherited trauma — moving between Berlin and Turkey, between family portraits and archival documents, diary entries and raw observation. With text contributions from both Kircher and writer Zoe Bullock, the work asks how we reckon with the circumstances we are born into, and how photography can serve as both wound and coping mechanism
