Stiya by Cole Barash (Deadbeat Club, Los Angeles, 2019) is a first-edition photobook limited to 707 copies by the Brooklyn and Cape Cod-based artist. The 84-page hardcover is printed in tritone offset with 45 black-and-white photographs, and its pages are bound in three different sizes. Barash brings together two intense forces of nature: a powerful nor’easter storm that hit the coast, and the birth of his first child just 24 hours later. Close-up images of ice, sand, water and wind-battered landscapes sit side by side with intimate pictures of the body during labour and birth. The overlapping pages weave the two stories together, so that land and body both appear shaped by extreme, transformative forces. The result is a book that is as harrowing as it is beautiful. Reviewed in The New Yorker and exhibited in Tokyo, it is a striking and inventive photobook about birth, fatherhood and the natural world.
