Longlisted for the Kraszna-Krausz Foundation's 2026 Photography Book Award and shortlisted at Les Rencontres d'Arles 2026, The Fold is a powerful and formally inventive work from Iranian-born artist Hoda Afshar (b. 1983). Taking as its starting point an archive created by French psychiatrist Gaëtan de Clérambault — who photographed thousands of veiled subjects in early 20th-century Morocco — Afshar subjects these fragmented colonial images to darkroom manipulation and digital intervention, transforming them into a critical interrogation of power and the gaze. The book examines how the bodies of Islamic women have been instrumentalised across history, from imperial unveiling campaigns to state-enforced veiling, and asks what it means to reclaim an image.
