For over 25 years, Tomoko Sawada has photographed only herself, transforming into hundreds of different women through wigs, make-up and costume to explore how our inner selves relate to how we appear. This book accompanies her first major solo show at a public museum, at the Tokyo Photographic Art Museum. It runs from her earliest Untitled (1996), through her breakthrough ID400 (1998), shot as 400 disguises in a photo booth, to Reflection (2020). The title draws on Japanese folklore of the shape-shifting fox, and Sawada leaves us unsure who is doing the bewitching.
