In 2023, Los Angeles-based photographer Daniel Dorsa was offered access to photograph the S.I.L.A. research group on Greenland's ice sheet. He kept going back, and the project grew into a portrait of the whole island and the life the ice sustains. Dorsa calls the book an "atlas", in the older sense of the word: not just a set of maps but an attempt to understand a place and our place within it.
The book is part scientific record, part personal journal. Dorsa presents Greenland as a land of contradictions: life-giving and life-taking, ancient and ever-changing, a source of both scientific inquiry and spiritual resonance. His colour photographs set vivid color against a stark white, moving between vast icescapes and the everyday life of communities on the coast. Portraits of a younger generation finding their place between the country's traditions and the pull of modernity run alongside. The work took on new urgency midway through, when the President of the United States threatened to seize Greenland. The result captures the island in a moment of profound climatic, political, and cultural transition.
This is Dorsa's fourth book and his first with Deadbeat Club Press, following Paradise (2021), The Sun Was Gold Like A Yolk Dripping (2023), and Lupine (2025). This copy is signed by the photographer.
