Untold Voices by Chieska Fortune Smith (Cairo Apartment, Japan, 2026) is the debut photobook from the London-based photographer, published in a first edition of 700 copies. The 96-page hardcover holds 69 colour plates and a loose insert, with foiled typography and a sakura headband, and was printed in Kyoto. The book began when Fortune Smith found a handful of vintage family photographs at her family home in Japan. As the daughter of an African-American soul singer and a Japanese classical dancer, she has long felt without solid grounding. Here she weaves three generations of family photographs together with haunting, enigmatic moments from everyday life. The result is a melancholy, dreamlike exploration of her roots and of finding a sense of identity rather than a fixed one. It is a beautifully produced, intimate contemporary photobook for collectors of fine art and Japanese photobooks.
