It returns to Grímsey, a tiny island about 40 kilometres off the north coast of Iceland, right on the Arctic Circle, with a population of around a hundred. Barash first photographed the island for his acclaimed 2015 monograph Grímsey, and here he digs deeper into the community. His pictures show the hardiness of the islanders, with children bracing against the wind and workers in the fish-processing plants, set against the cliffs, harbour and endless northern light. This elegiac body of work explores mortality, existence and memory, and some of the project’s photographs were even printed on coils of rope and rice paper. It is a quietly haunting work of contemporary documentary and landscape photography from an acclaimed independent publisher.
